The grapes from this brilliant, old vineyard came to us on October 12th, 2009. We crushed over 15% whole destemmed berries in macrobins and put them in a five-day cold soak. Then we brought them out into the warm Alameda sunshine and let them incubate for a day. Once the temperature was right, we inoculated them with D80, and BM4x4 yeast strains. They had about a two-week fermentation, and then we pressed them off into a settling tank. After all the gross lees had settled, we racked into 14 barrels which were a combo of new French oak, one-year old French oak and neutral oak.
Planted in 1968 by Frank Barberi, Denis Carver and Anne Sutro now farm the breathtaking Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga. Palisades Vineyard sits in a small riparian valley northeast of Calistoga in the northern end of the Napa Valley. It is bisected by an occasionally torrential Horns Creek, and is blessed with the kind of cobbley loam soil and very hot summers that are perfectly suited for growing both Rhone and Bordeaux style wines. We take the East side of Block 11 which is all head pruned and blessed with cobbley, loam soil, which manifests one of the sexiest Petite Sirah’s around. We nick-named this wine ‘Kama Sutra” for a reason!
