2008 Zinfandel, Reserve, Sonoma County
PRODUCTION NOTES
Sourced entirely from the Monte Rosso vineyard, the grapes were hand harvested in early September. At the winery, the fruit was crushed into macro bins with over 20% of the berries left whole. After a four-day cold-soak at 45 degrees, the bins were warmed up and inoculated with RP15 (the Rockpile yeast strain). During the following extraction period the fermentation caps were punch-down five times per day to ensure maximum skin to juice contact. After a short, healthy fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked to barrels for aging.
WINEMAKER COMMENTS
A 108 year old vineyard, Monte Rosso is situated approximately 1600 feet above Sonoma Valley, on Moon Mountain Road. The old vines grow in mountain conditions and are rooted in red soil, a composite of iron and clay deposits, which is where the vineyard takes its name.
From the moment these grapes came in, the characteristic ‘Monte Rosso’ honeycomb flavor was presentand shows beautifully throughout the entire lot. The finished wine exhibits rich strawberry jam and orange zest components, with evident black tea, currant and herbal spice notes.
